We were proud to welcome 18 clinicians from around the UK this week to our latest Pre-Hospital Emergency Anaesthesia (PHEA) course.
The course brings together doctors, paramedics and nurses to learn the intricacies of performing effective anaesthesia out in the field.
It is led by GNAAS doctors and paramedics but in an atmosphere that encourages the sharing of experience between participants from different clinical backgrounds.
The course content features a mixture of classroom learning as well as outdoor ‘moulages’ – realistic training scenarios involving ambulance and fire service staff.
Jamie Walsh, GNAAS training manager and course director, said: “The great thing about this course is the grouping of people with different experiences and skill-sets. Doctors, for instance, may have exceptional medical knowledge, but can learn from the vast pre-hospital experience of the paramedics. The feedback has been brilliant and it’s been a pleasure to host such a talented group.”
The course was held at the fire service training facility at Bowburn but from next year, GNAAS will run its training courses at its new headquarters at Progress House, near Eaglescliffe.
The charity’s fundraising, lottery and administration has already moved to the site, with its operational crew and aircraft moving from Durham Tees Valley Airport later in the year.
