Staff at a Cumbrian technology firm have harnessed their baking talents – and their technical expertise – to raise money for a local charity through a fundraising mobile app.
Twelve people from Penrillian, a bespoke mobile software house based in Penrith, took part in an internal bake-off competition, which included baking cakes, bread and pastries. The competition was won by Judith Fawcett.
The workers then decided to make an app to showcase their culinary efforts and raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).
Ian Hetherington, head of sales and marketing, said: “At the end of it, we had some really good recipes so we decided to share them with the world and make some money for a good cause at the same time.
“Like so many of the people who enjoy our beautiful Lake District, we value the fantastic service of the GNAAS. We hope that any money raised from people downloading the app and viewing the recipes can help them out.”
The Penrillian Charity Bake app is free to download from Google Play and iTunes.
Once downloaded, users are encouraged to view the information about the people who took part and their recipes and donate to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), which is based just five miles away in Langwathby.

Claire Herworth, spokeswoman for GNAAS, said: “Thanks to the developers, testers and sales staff at Penrillian for thinking of us. The crew certainly enjoyed sampling some of the recipes.”
