A motocross rider was airlifted to hospital after coming off his bike at speed at Gilgarran near Whitehaven on Saturday (May 30). The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to help the 18-year-old man who had sustained life-threatening injuries. The doctor-led helicopter crew administered a general anaesthetic and splinted multiple fractures at the scene before flying him to the major trauma centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. The flight took 27 minutes and he was in a critical condition upon arrival at hospital. .
