Meet the team: GNAAS doctor Paddy Duncan

GNAAS has welcomed a new doctor to its critical care team in the hopes of expanding and becoming a 24/7 service.

New doctor, 36-year-old Paddy Duncan, from Gateshead, has joined the charity at a crucial time and will join the other team of 35 doctors that work for the organisation across the North East and Cumbria.

Holly Taylor interviewed Paddy to find out more about his life:

Paddy, where do you work outside of GNAAS?

I work as an anesthetics registrar at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle.

Where did you do your medical studies?

I went to Leeds University and finished medical school in 2012.

Did you always know you wanted to be a doctor?

I’d say so yes.

I decided pretty early on that this was what I wanted to do when choosing my A-Levels.

Why did you choose anaesthetics?

It’s a mix of practical and applied science.

It’s also a total privilege to help people and put them at ease in their worst moments.

What would you do if you weren’t a doctor?

I love languages so maybe something with Spanish or I’d have liked to have been an Officer in the Army.

How did you find your interview for GNAAS?

The whole interview process was very intense and highly stressful. I left feeling like I hadn’t performed as well as I could have, and I was disappointed because it’s something I have worked towards for a very long time.

I couldn’t believe it when I found out I was successful and went out with the family to have some celebratory drinks.

What has the team been like to work with so far?

These guys strive for excellence and everyone from the operational team to the fundraising staff are all driving the charity forward and supporting one cause.

I am thrilled to be working with GNAAS and I am really looking forward to continuing my training with some of the best doctors and paramedics I have ever worked with.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love the outdoors!

Walks in the Lake District, cycling, and I have two young children so I spend time with them.
