A man in his twenties was in a critical condition this afternoon after a two van crash on the A66 at Penruddock, between Penrith and Keswick.
The Great North Air Ambulance’s Pride of Cumbria aircraft was called at 10.40am to the incident, and was soon followed by the charity’s Guardian of the North helicopter, which is based at Durham Tees Valley Airport near Darlington.
The crews from GNAAS joined North West Ambulance Service medics and local BASICS immediate response doctors at the scene.
Three people were injured in the collision.
One, a man in his twenties, had sustained serious head injuries and was anaesthetised at the scene to aid his recovery.
He was flown to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for specialist treatment.
The cross-Pennine flight took 25 minutes and the patient arrived in a critical condition.
