GNAAS called to fatal bus crash


The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to Darlington at 11.01am today after a bus crashed into a building in the town centre, killing one woman and injuring others. Our Durham Tees Valley Airport based aircraft landed at North Lodge Park and due to the initial serious incident reports, our second aircraft based in Langwathby, Cumbria, was also dispatched to the scene.

Our Durham Tees Valley Airport based aircraft landed at North Lodge Park and due to the initial serious incident reports, our second aircraft based in Langwathby, Cumbria, was also dispatched to the scene. This was later stood down before it reached the scene.

The GNAAS doctor-led trauma team treated one woman, a pedestrian believed to be in her 50s, for serious lower leg injuries before she was transported to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, by North East Ambulance Service paramedics. Her condition was not life-threatening.

One woman was killed in the incident.

Durham Constabulary said: “Police are now in a position to confirm an elderly female pedestrian has died in this morning’s bus collision in Northgate, Darlington. Two pedestrians who were injured have been taken to hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.”
