A CYCLIST was airlifted after sustaining serious injuries when he collided with a car close to a waypoint on the forthcoming Tour de France.
The 48-year-old Bradford man was riding with friends at Carpley Green, near Bainbridge in Wensleydale when the incident happened on Saturday. The picturesque Dales village will play host to the Tour de France’s first stage in July.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) flew to the scene from its base at Durham Tees Valley Airport. The on board doctor and paramedic crew anaesthetised the man at the scene before he was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.
He had sustained severe spinal, pelvic, chest and internal injuries and was said to be in a stable condition on arrival at hospital.
North Yorkshire Police closed the lane, which links Wharfedale and Wensleydale, for several hours and launched an investigation into the incident.
