Three Cumbrian’s raced a push cart designed as a helicopter to raise funds for GNAAS at the weekend (July 19).
Peter Thwaites, 53, from Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria, took part in the Whitehaven Push Cart Derby alongside teammates William Thwaites and James Wilbye in a bid to be crowned the ultimate champion.
Peter, who is a keen motorcyclist, made the cart out of two mountain bikes and trampoline parts.
Teams competed against the clock at Whitehaven harbourside.
Peter said: “By participating in the Derby, I wanted to raise funds to contribute towards saving even one life while entertaining a few people along the way.
“We spent about an hour after our run pushing kids, and big kids, around the park at £2 a lap. This helped add a lot of weight to the collecting tins.”
He added: “My friend’s son once fell off a swing into a river and the GNAAS crew got him to James Cook University Hospital in fourteen minutes. It really is a lifeline.”
Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS said: “What a brilliant design. We absolutely love the gesture and should we ever need another aircraft, I think we know who to call. Thank you to Peter, William and James for being fantastic sports and raising funds in the process.”
