A horse rider has thanked the air ambulance crew that flew to her aid after an accident in Carlisle.
Sarah Tyler, 35, from Carlisle, was competing in Warwick Hall Horse Trials at Warwick-on-Eden when her horse, Fuzzy Bear, suffered a heart attack on July 12.
Sarah, who had rode on Fuzzy for the past seven years, said: “We had nearly finished. He’d completed his best ever dressage and he show jumped clear. We were on the second from last jump when he had a heart attack. The last thing I can remember is seeing the fence and then my memories are very vague after that.
Sarah, who owns her own cleaning business, suffered a broken pelvis and the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called into action. After treatment by the GNAAS doctor and paramedic crew, she was flown to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary in twenty minutes.
She said: “It was a huge relief to me when I knew the air ambulance was coming. They got me to the care I needed as quickly as possible and I couldn’t ask for anything else.
“Losing him [Fuzzy Bear] has been the worst bit. He was a gentle giant. We used to call him captain sensible.”
Sarah is currently recovering at home on crutches but hopes to get back in the saddle in the future.
She said: “I’ve been taking small steps so far but recovering well and hobbling about. My family, friends and British Eventing have all been so helpful. My goal is to ride again.”
