We were honoured to be chosen as one of three charities to receive just over £13,000 from Anglo American’s Great Days Programme.
Great Days is a campaign to drive safe and responsible working practices at Anglo American’s pioneering Woodsmith Project.
The charity pot accumulates every day based on safety and environmental performance and meeting project milestones.
Each year, the team working on the Woodsmith Project are asked to vote for their favourite local charity, with the most popular in Scarborough, Whitby and Teesside nominated as their three beneficiaries for the year.
Daniel Gregory, external communications officer, said: “Great Days helps maintain a daily focus on safety, schedule, and environment – whilst supporting a number of great local charities in the process.
“For every Great Day we have, we put money into a dedicated charity pot. Over the last three years, we have donated over £180,000 to good causes through the initiative.
“GNAAS was selected as one of our three Great Days partners for 2023 by our team. Many of our team spoke passionately about the service GNAAS offers when we were going through the selection process.”
For those unfamiliar with The Woodsmith Project, it is Anglo American’s polyhalite fertiliser mine, which is being developed on the North Yorkshire coast and Teesside.
It will set new standards for sustainable mining while helping to boost food production and sustainable farming practices.
Daniel said: “We’re sinking the deepest mine shafts in Europe and constructing a state-of-the-art 37km tunnel to mine polyhalite – a natural mineral that will be processed and shipped across the globe as a fertiliser product that will help farmers grow more food in a more sustainable manner.”
2,000 people are currently employed across the project, 1,400 of which are from the region, and £143million was spent sourcing goods from local suppliers in 2023. The first product from Woodsmith is expected in 2027.
In recognition of the donation, employees from the project were invited to the launch of our new Corporate Partner Scheme which celebrated local companies who have supported our charity throughout 2023 and into 2024.
To become a Corporate Partner at GNAAS, businesses need to raise a minimum of £5,000, and in return they are given opportunities to volunteer, use our conference room, and have first refusal of sponsorships and invites to charity events, as well as receive a glass display plaque acknowledging their valuable contribution to our charity.
Daniel said: “We were all really, really impressed by the GNAAS HQ, in particular the way they have used their brand to inspire pride and inspiration in the amazing work they continue to do across the region.
“GNAAS offers an invaluable service to people across a huge patch, backed up by a dedicated, passionate team of highly-skilled people and every penny that is raised to help them continue their support is money well spent.”
