Used office supplies donated by business across the North-East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria are proving to be a life-line for the region’s air ambulance.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) Trading Company recycles toner cartridges, textiles and mobile phones, turning used goods into hard cash for the life-saving charity.
One organisation, Middlesbrough College, recycles ink and toner cartridges with the Newton Aycliffe based operation.
The college has been recycling with GNAAS for more than ten years, and in the last year alone has donated several hundred cartridges, worth around £500.
Zoe Lewis, principal chief executive at Middlesbrough College, said: “We are delighted to support GNAAS any way we can, and this is such a simple way to boost the cause. We would encourage as many businesses and organisations as possible to get involved.”
Each year, millions of empty toner and inkjet cartridges are needlessly thrown away when they run out of ink, ending up in the planet’s landfills or incinerators.
Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS, said: “Every cartridge the charity receives goes directly towards life-saving missions. Recycling these empty cartridges is easy; it saves energy, is environmentally beneficial and helps keep our aircraft flying. It really is that simple.
“Many people and businesses in the region have taken the charity to their heart and we could not do without their support. We are always keen to form new partnerships.”
The GNAAS Trading Company, which donates 100 per cent of its profits to the charity, also provides confidential document shredding, textile recycling and mobile phone recycling.
