A STOCKTON gym has raised £2,468 for charity in memory of an Ingleby Barwick schoolboy.
Watt Fitness in Teesside Industrial Estate held the fundraiser in memory of 13-year-old Edward “Eddie” Hamblett, who died suddenly on January 31.
The money donated will go towards the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) which flew to help Eddie, who was a pupil at Conyers School in Yarm.
The doctor on board the aircraft at the time, Jeff Doran, and paramedic Jamie Walsh, took part in the event entitled “#DoingItForEddie.”
Owner of the training studio, Joanne Bannatyne, said: “It was a really exciting day. Our members paid £5 for each class and I match-funded it.
“We’re so proud of our coaches and members. The community came together and it was great to see such support after a tragedy which affected everyone.”
Eddie’s parents Ian and Ruth, and his brother Harry came along to the charity day, as well as his football club TIBS FC in Thornaby, where he played for the U14s team.
Nine classes were held with activities such as a bootcamp, wattcycle, spinning and boxing.
Mrs Bannatyne continued: “Our Watt Fitness community produced some awesome efforts with fantastic results. Some people took on triple classes, others even did six. When fitness meets charity, great things can happen.
“Head coach, Keziah Wright, put a lot of energy and dedication into the day so I want to thank her too.”
Organisers, Mrs Bannatyne, personal assistant Gloria Lawson and coach Simon Hunter visited the GNAAS airbase at Durham Tees Valley Airport to hand over the donation to air ambulance doctor Jeff Doran on March 10.
Dr Jeff Doran said: “A massive thanks to the team and everyone that gave their time, donations, cake and calories to make it a big success. We loved meeting you guys.
“The money will go towards keeping the aircraft in operation.”
