An update from the three jobs that the GNAAS aircrew attended yesterday.
Yesterday, at 4pm, the Great North Air Ambulance Service was called to Birtley, Gateshead, where a four-year-old boy had been hit by a vehicle and sustained multiple injuries. The GNAAS doctor-led aircrew assessed and treated him before he was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. Thankfully, the boy was not as badly hurt as first feared and had sustained only minor injuries. The flight to hospital took just three minutes, this same journey by road would have taken around 20 minutes. He arrived at hospital in a stable condition.
Earlier, the charity was called to Workington where a man had been knocked over by his dog and sustained a broken leg. The GNAAS doctor-led critical care team treated the 82-year-old alongside North West Ambulance Service paramedics. He was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, in a flight that took just 14 minutes. This same journey by road would have taken around 45 minutes. He arrived at hospital in a stable condition.
Also yesterday, at 2.25pm, GNAAS was called to Red Pike, near Buttermere, where a man had collapsed at the peak of the fell. GNAAS medics treated the 26-year-old, believed to be from London, before flying him to the Cumberland Infirmary. The flight to hospital took just 13 minutes.
