We had a busy weekend, here is a round-up of some of the incidents we attended including Stainton, Buttermere, Chester-le-Street and North Yorkshire.
On Friday April 15, the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to the A66 at Stainton, near Penrith, where a car had left the road and collided with a tree. GNAAS was called to the scene at 4pm where a 38-year-old woman was found to be trapped inside her vehicle. She was freed from the vehicle before the GNAAS doctor and paramedic administered blood and performed other treatments. The patient was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle in a flight that took 25 minutes. The same journey would have taken around one hour and 40 minutes by road. She arrived in a critical condition.
On Saturday at 11.35am, GNAAS was called to the A1 motorway, near Chester-le-Street, where there had been a road traffic collision. A male driver was cut free from his vehicle then received treatment for head and chest injuries from the GNAAS doctor-led trauma team. The 59-year-old man was flown to the RVI in a flight that took just five minutes. He arrived in a stable condition.
On Saturday at 11.45am, GNAAS was called to assist Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team at Buttermere, Lake District, where a woman was found to have collapsed. The GNAAS aircrew, from the Langwathby airbase in Cumbria, stabilised the woman before she was taken to hospital by road ambulance where she arrived in a stable condition.
Later on Saturday afternoon, we were called to Newby, near Penrith, where a man had entered cardiac arrest in his home. The doctor-led aircrew resuscitated and treated the 65-year-old patient before he was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, in a flight that took 14 minutes. He arrived in a critical condition.
Also on Saturday afternoon, Yorkshire Ambulance Service required assistance from GNAAS in an incident in which a 72-year-old woman had fallen down stairs at her home in Thwaite, North Yorkshire. The GNAAS aircrew assessed and treated the woman for shoulder and arm injuries. The patient was flown to James Cook University Hospital (JCUH), Middlesbrough, in a flight that took 18 minutes. She arrived in a stable condition.

Yesterday at 3pm, GNAAS was called to Scarborough where three people had been involved in a quad biking accident. One of the patients was assessed and treated by the GNAAS doctor-led aircrew and was put into an induced coma before being flown to JCUH in a flight that took 18 minutes.
