Lorry driver airlifted to hospital after A595 crash

A LORRY driver was airlifted to hospital after a road traffic collision in Cumbria. The 51-year-old man, from Workington, suffered serious back, leg, pelvis, and chest injuries after the collision with a car on the A595 near Wigton on Monday (March 21). The driver of the car, a 51-year-old woman from Egremont, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The lorry crashed through fencing and down an embankment, coming to rest in trees. Once at the scene, the GNAAS doctor and paramedic crew stabilised the driver while Cumbria Fire and Rescue worked to free the man from the wreckage. He was then moved up the embankment using safety lines and transported to the air ambulance before being flown to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary in 20 minutes where he arrived in a stable condition. A GNAAS spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected in this terrible incident.” GNAAS is a charity and needs to raise £4.5m every year to continue to operate..
