The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to a collision between two vehicles on the A595 at Newby Cross, near Carlisle, yesterday.
The collision had left two women dead and others seriously injured. The GNAAS doctor-led trauma team treated a three-year-old boy for serious head, chest and pelvic injuries.
The team anaesthetised the boy and gave him a blood transfusion before he reached hospital.
He was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where his condition was described as critical but stable.
A GNAAS spokesperson said: “We’d like to offer our most sincere condolences to all those affected, and our gratitude to our fellow emergency workers for their co-operation on scene.”
