The official tourist board for Cumbria – Cumbria Tourism – has donated £600 to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).
The money has been raised through the “FairBooking” tourism scheme with the help of accommodation providers across the county.
The scheme aims to give the best accommodation deal to customers by direct booking and a fairer deal for local businesses. Hotels and B&Bs who are part of the campaign donate to a local charity that supports the area and GNAAS was chosen to receive the vital funds.
Andy Dalton, a paramedic at GNAAS, said: “The funds donated will help to keep our Pride of Cumbria aircraft in the air, and will save lives in the county. We need to raise £4.5m every year to continue to operate.”
Cumbria Tourism’s Sue Clarke, who is the manager of the FairBookingUK helpdesk, visited the charity’s Langwathby airbase to hand over the funds to the crew. She said: “Cumbria Tourism is pleased to support local charities on which visitors depend and this year we are delighted to donate to GNAAS.
“The tourism industry is worth more than £2billion to Cumbria’s economy. Accommodation providers who use online travel agents are very concerned about the high commission rates they are paying to these often oversees based companies. FairBookingUK aims to reduce the amount of commission that accommodation providers pay, helping them to be more profitable so that the local economy can grow stronger.”
