Organisers of a 26-mile cycle ride around the biggest man-made lake in Northern Europe are encouraging people to take part and raise vital funds for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).
Cyclists will circumnavigate Kielder Water in the Northumberland National Park on September 26.
This is the first time that the Kielder Water Cycle Ride has been open to the public as it was previously ridden only by employees of Northumbrian Water – the company which owns the reservoir.
Organiser, Peter Scorer, of Northumbrian Water, said: “I am looking forward to opening the event to the public. It is a great way to raise money and to experience all the beauty that the lake has to offer while raising funds for a vital charity.”
So far, there are 58 people signed up to take part in the ride.
Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS said: “We rely on the generosity of the public to stay in the air and with support like this, we can continue to save lives in the region. We wish all the cyclists the best of luck.”
The route is mainly flat but is only suitable for bikes with full-size wheels, and is not suitable for road bikes. Participants will be rewarded with a hot drink after the ride.
Each rider’s £20 entry fee will go towards GNAAS. The charity can supply sponsorship forms and they have an online fundraising platform: createanddonate.co.uk
There is a caravan park on site and log cabins available to hire at Kielder Water.
The event is supported by Kielder Water Forest Park and Northumbrian Water.
