The Great North Air Ambulance Service was called to an elderly woman who had been struck by a car and sustained critical injuries on the A66 at Stainton, near Penrith, at around 2:30pm yesterday (Mar 2). North West Ambulance Service and Penrith BEEP fund doctor, Theo Weston, who is also a medic on board GNAAS, arrived first and had begun treatment. The patient was in a critical condition and her heart had stopped due to her injuries.

North West Ambulance Service and Penrith BEEP fund doctor, Theo Weston, who is also a medic on board GNAAS, arrived first and had begun treatment.
The patient was in a critical condition and her heart had stopped due to her injuries. By performing roadside surgery and transfusing blood at the scene, the doctor-led helicopter crew restarted her heart and then anaesthetised her for the journey to hospital.
She was flown to the Major Trauma Centre at Newcastle’s RVI in 20 minutes.
