The Great North Air Ambulance Service performed roadside surgery on a man that had been critically injured in a road traffic collision on the A19 near Sunderland at 10:45am today (Wed).
The patient was anaesthetised at the scene before the surgery could be performed.
Once stabilised, he was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. The flight took seven minutes and he arrived in a critical condition.
Ambulance paramedics, rapid response teams, the fire service and police also attended.
Soon after returning to the Teesside base, the GNAAS crew were called to the scene of another road traffic collision between a lorry and a car on the A66 near Barnard Castle at 12:20pm.
A woman, believed to be in her 20s, sustained serious head injuries. She was treated by our doctor-led trauma team and then flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. The flight took 10 minutes.
