An air ambulance charity has challenged towns to each gather a tonne of unwanted clothing to keep its helicopters flying.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) is holding clothing collections in Darlington, Stockton, Northallerton, Workington, Kendal, Alnwick and Whitby next week as part of its Air Ambulance Week campaign that takes place in September (22nd-28th).
Empty sacks are available to collect now at the locations, but clothing will be welcomed in any plastic carrier bag or bin liner.
Claire Herworth, of GNAAS, said: “We have set a target of collecting a tonne a town, so we hope residents in all the areas can rise to the challenge.
“With the changing of the seasons, it’s as good a time as any to root out those unwanted items.
“Every penny raised from the sale of the items will go to the air ambulance, so everyone’s a winner.”
The fundraiser has been boosted by car dealership Sherwoods, which has offered its three showrooms in three of the towns as collection points.
Simon MacConachie, General Manager at Sherwoods in Darlington, said: “This is a great excuse to have a clear out of the wardrobe and support our local air ambulance.
“Sherwoods is happy to help and we look forward to welcoming plenty of people with their bags to our showrooms during Air Ambulance Week.”
The collections take place in Sherwoods’ premises during office hours at Chesnut Street, Darlington and Preston Farm, Stockton on Wednesday (24th) and at Standard Way, Northallerton on Thursday (25th).
Collections are also taking place on Monday (22nd) at Workington’s Asda Superstore, Dunmail Park, the Co-operative Food, 48 Bondgate, Alnwick and the Co-operative Food, Langborne Road, Whitby, and on Wednesday (24th) at Jump Into Kendal, Elephant Yard, Kendal.
